100% local @ The Farmers' Market
Citrusdal Farmers’ Market started in December 2009 at the Sandveldhuisie & Museum. The Sandveldhuisie is an awesome venue as it is owned by the community and the Citrusdal Farmers’ Market is run by the community and is for the community.
The Museum is one of the oldest and most beautiful buildings in Citrusdal and has original pressed ceilings and plenty to see inside about how life used to be in Citrusdal.
How the Citrusdal Farmers' Market all started...
The Market is 100% local and this is what we strongly believe in – supporting local produce and thereby supporting our community. Citrusdal is a small farming community and we grow some of the best produce in the world right here! Most of Citrusdal’s produce gets exported around the world, so how lucky are we to be able to get the best products right at our own Farmers’ Market?
The Market originally started very small with Leslie Abrahams selling organic vegetables, Tannie Hannah Janse Van Rensburg and her husband Albert selling delicious pies, homebakes and preserves and Theresa Burton, helped massively by Nicky Hallett to get the Market started selling homebakes and proteas, also farmed organically. It has grown substantially since then and regular stall holders are Maria Mouton, who is legendary for her baking and Steve Oldroyd from Hebron who is famous for his breads, sausages and preserves and also Dalene Schoombee who makes the best cheese, yoghurt, smoothies and dairy products in the Cederberg. We have a number of locals who come and sell their produce as it is in season – Martli Slabber, who started off with worm farming and got a whole community composting like Citrusdal has never seen before, she last came with delicious home made salt lemons and ginger beer. Others that have been before were Nicolien Du Plessis with activities and delights for children, Meline Rontgen also with plenty of good things for the kids to get stuck into; Lorraine and her parents with beautiful wrought iron and jewellery; Ria with knitted products and gorgeous wool; Salomien Stekhoven with amazing contemporary clothing that she makes herself; Ben & Vanessa Grib with beautiful plants and Vanessa’s stunning hand crafted cards made with her letter press; Bette Price selling quality labourers clothing; Pat & Nico Thiart selling Nico’s world famous milk tarts, spinach, Rooibos tea and frozen vegetables; Rob & Gemma Stotter with their green fingers selling awesome seedlings and olive soaps. We are very lucky to have great support from our local community via the local churches and through Citour to help us with our advertising.
